Fancy Pokket

One of New Brunswick’s most inspiring immigrant success stories is that of Mike Timani, the founder and CEO of Fancy Pokket Bakery, now the largest producer of pita bread, flatbreads, bagels, and tortilla wraps in Atlantic Canada.

Born in Venezuela to Lebanese parents, Mike moved to Lebanon at the age of five. During the Lebanese Civil War, he immigrated to Canada with intentions of becoming a mechanical engineer. However, due to immigration status restrictions, he initially couldn’t attend school and instead began working in the hospitality industry, eventually studying hotel management at Ryerson University.

In 1983, Mike moved to Saint John, New Brunswick, to help open a new Hilton hotel. By 1989, he decided to venture into entrepreneurship, opening a small 1,000-square-foot bakery in Moncton to supply pita bread for his newly established restaurant, both under the name Fancy Pokket.

At the time, pita bread was relatively unknown in the region. Through persistent efforts, including providing samples to local retailers, Mike introduced and popularized pita bread in Atlantic Canada. The demand grew rapidly, prompting him to focus solely on the bakery. Over the years, Fancy Pokket expanded six times, evolving into a 45,000-square-foot facility employing around 60 people. The bakery now produces a wide range of products, including various types of pita, bagels, tortillas, and gluten-free items.

Mike’s contributions extend beyond business. He has been actively involved in community service, serving as President of the New Brunswick Multicultural Council and supporting initiatives for newcomers. Notably, he provided a two-month supply of pita bread to approximately 900 Syrian refugees who arrived in New Brunswick, offering them a comforting taste of home.

From humble beginnings, Mike Timani’s journey exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit and resilience of immigrants, making a significant impact on New Brunswick’s economy and multicultural fabric.
